PEI-AGRI

LCA of olive-oil and wine-growing chains, by associating zootechnical species in olive groves, to increase the environmental and economic sustainability of the companies

Obiettivi
Objectives

The main purpose of the project is the creation of an eco-sustainable chain of local companies in the olive-oil, wine, livestock and forest sectors, using the LCA approach, in order to lead to have all the necessary bases for the certification of the environmental footprint of companies products, quantifying the environmental removals during the company processes, and evaluating the carbon credits generated by the carbon storage of the plants, with consequent possibility of inclusion of companies in the voluntary carbon credit market.

Activities

The first step of the project is the characterization of companies, in terms of organization and production processes, and the collection of data for the implementation of the LCA methodology, which will be carried out for the analysis of the life cycle of the chosen products, through the two different ISO and PEF methodologies. The strategies for the reduction of the impacts calculated and the possible carbon credits obtainable from these measures will be identified and applied. Finally, we will study the feasibility of any certification projects for these credits, in order to lead the companies toward the voluntary carbon credit market.

Context

The context of the project is that of local Umbrian companies operating in the olive-oil, wine, livestock and forest sectors. The sector can be considered an important sector for the economy of the Umbria region. In fact, it is a traditional resource of the Umbrian territory that originates from a typically peasant culture. The project puts into practice a new methodology that well responds to the need for PSR innovation in order to increase competitiveness and sustainability in the agricultural, zootechnical and forestry sectors. This innovation is reflected in the creation of a company prototype, which can become an "extensible example on the regional territory" and be replicable on a large scale.
