Calculation of carbon capture and storage and Forest Certification/ Method of Carbon conservation and storage in the Marche forest sector
The aim of the project is to reach a Sustainable Forest Management of the assets managed by the G.O. according to the Pefc Certification procedures. The planning, certified, will provide R. Marche with a useful planning tool and to the public managers and forest owners the possibility of issuing CO2 certificates in the voluntary market. The objectives are investments in forests managed also through the exchange of certificates and the employment of forest workers in a continuous and professional manner. The existing PGFs on the woodland object of the project are then adapted to maximize the ecosystem services.
Action 1 - Coordination and Management of the Operational Group
Action 2 - Procedure of Sustainable Forest Management Certification (GFS)
Action 3 - Identification of methodologies and evaluation of the indicators identified in the GFS Manual
Action 4 - Dissemination and transfer of knowledge
The Marche woods are a tool for mitigating climate change and represent a potential for socio-economic development of marginal areas and mountain of the region. Proper management, which includes medium-long term objectives for the ecological maintenance of the forest system, guarantees growth in terms of employment in the induced production and the supply of ecosystem services required and necessary for the present and future society.
The Italian forest area has doubled in 50 years, reaching more than 10 million hectares or about 30% of the total area, of which 60% is located in the mountains with a wood commission of 1 Md of usable m3. (Urbinati - Iorio)
The Italian woodland uses are estimated at 10 Million. m3 equal to 1% of the commission, of which 60% is firewood; the utilization rate is the lowest in Europe and reaches on average 30%, at the same time the national wood consumption is equal to 42 Mln m3, which is imported. 5.1 million hectares are not managed (Urbinati - Iorio) (Pettenella). In the Marche, the annual utilization rate is less than 1% and the uses for 94% are for maturity cuts, 2% for “intercalary” cuts and 4% for conversions. (CFS and Marche Region).
GFS Certification Procedure
Determination of carbon credits in the sectors recognized by the Marrakesh Agreements, that is, epigeal and underground biomass, litter, necromass and soils.
