Olive biodiversity and safeguard
The project aim is to drive the olivicolture development of Emilia Romagna region, through recovery, safeguard and characterization of local varities at erosion risk but also agronomic and oil enhacement finalized to a correct management of new plants olive trees and to the production of an oil with special features, rappresentative of Emilia Romagna region.
The project is composed of 2 work packages. The first work package provides activities of reconnaissance, census and genetic characterization; morphological characterization, multiplication and conservation ex situ; chemical and sensorial characterization and registration to the regional Repertory. The second work package provides activities of multiplication of olive varieties at erosion risk; agronomic evaluation and definition of guidelines for an optimal management of olive plants; realization of oils blend of Emilia Romagna region; valorization and marketing strategies.
The expected results are:
- Genetic and morphological characterization of new native olive varieties at erosion risk and evaluation of chemical and sensory features of produced oils;
- Implementation of the list of registered olive genotypes of Regional Repertory;
- Definition of agronomic guidelines for an highly sustainable optimal management of new plants olive trees;
- Valorization and promotion of some olive varities that highlight the quality and the link with origin territory;
- Definition of different types of oil which have greater impact on the market in order to get high quality “extra virgin olive oil”;
- Production and distribution of certified olive varieties in high landscape value areas;
- Increase the basket of farm products
The benefits in oil-olive sector are:
- Increase of regional olive biodiversity;
- Valorization of olive territory of Emilia Romagna region;
- Training of technical personnel about aspects of biodiversity safeguard
- Diffusion of agronomic highly sustainable practices that improve final quality of olives and guidelines that allow to manage better olive plants;
- Increase of regional olive nursery sector;
- Increase of historical, cultural and food knowledges in protected areas by European Community;
- Increase of food tourism
