PEI-AGRI

Maize & Vegetables using Hemp as trap crop. Reduction of cropping inputs also with Triticum spp.

Obiettivi
Objectives

Chemical input control in low impact agriculture is strictly connected to water and environmental health. MACARENA aims at reducing the use of agrochemicals via crop rotation with ancient varieties and the use of hemp as corn borer trap crop both on maize and pepper.

Activities

The three year project is structured as it follows:

  • Coordination and cooperation;
  • Planning to insert hemp and ancient grains;
  • Indicators selection and set up of monitoring procedures;
  • Plan execution in the field;
  • Prototype development;
  • Dissemination;
  • Training of the participants on the cropping stage as well as on the cultivation, harvesting and stocking of hemp.

Pratice abstract
Description

The main expected results consists two main products:
"Use of hemp as corn borer trap crop” to reduce its impact on both mais and pepper crops. This, in turn, reduces the use of pesticides favoring the organic as well as the conventional IPM. Hemp is intended as an ecological infrastructure to attract both the corn bored (O. nibilalis) and its parasites.
“N fertilizer and pesticide reduction” thanks to the re introduction of hemp as well as ancient varieties of Triticum. Such crops, in rotation ask for low chemicals to reduce weeds and to live and produce. To support the reintroduction of such crops, the yield stage will be monitored and supported.
