Characterisation and exploitation of local fruit biodiversity and evaluation of innovative apple genotypes for agriculture in mountain areas
The main goal of the project is the exploitation at different levels of local fruit biodiversity (2 apples
and 4 pears) and of innovative apple genotypes to improve profitability for farmers and to develop a
profitable fruit cultivation in marginal mountain areas. This goal will be achieved by: an objective
characterisation (pomological, chemical, genetic, metabolic, and technological) on fresh and processed (steam cooking and lyophilisation) fruits. Finally, the project pay attention on the
introduction/reintroduction in cultivation, in a biological management, of innovative genotypes and
local varieties.
Activities of the project are: the characterisation of local pear and apple biodiversity; the analysis the
metabolic composition and of the nutritional value of local varieties and innovative apple genotypes;
the determination bioactive compounds in processed products; on farm introduction/reintroduction of
the studied genotypes to increase their cultivation in the Emilia Romagna region; development of new packaging for the market; dissemination of the results and transfer of the innovation generated within the project to the final users by organizing training courses to show possibilities offered by old and new genetic resources.
